Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Overview

Our innovative Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) Program in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) provides highly-qualified students with the firm theoretical foundation and interdisciplinary skills that are essential for career advancement in the rapidly-changing field of chemical and biomolecular engineering. This is primarily a degree for students who wish to prepare themselves for research and development activities by obtaining a more solid foundation in the principles of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

Our graduates not only pursue successful careers, they provide leadership in academia and a wide variety of industrial settings in fields from pharmaceutical, biotech, advanced materials, and electronics, to the more traditional areas of chemicals, oil, and gas.

Graduates of our program are found at companies such as Merck, Bristol-Myers Squibb, General Electric, United Technologies, Bridgestone Americas, Exxon Mobile, Honeywell, and Rohm & Haas.

Prerequisites

Full-time students whose undergraduate degrees are in a field other than chemical engineering are required to take at least the following undergraduate core chemical and biomolecular engineering courses during their first year:

  • Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology
  • Cellular and Biomolecular Engineering
  • Catalysis and Reaction Engineering
  • Energy and Environmental Engineering
  • Molecular Simulation and Thermodynamics
  • Soft Matter and Complex Fluids
  • Systems Engineering

Research

Students may substitute a thesis for two elective courses. Areas of concentration available include: Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Control, Design, Bioengineering, Polymer Engineering, Heat Transfer, Computer Applications. Students have access to research labs on campus such as the Advanced Chemical Technologies Lab and the Vagelos Laboratories.
