From Vietnam to Penn: Thanh Ly’s Journey as an International Student in Robotics

“Growing up with a deep fascination for robotics, I knew I needed an environment that values innovation and interdisciplinary learning. The U.S., with its legacy of technological advancements, was the ideal destination. Penn Engineering stood out for its academic excellence, cutting-edge resources, and collaborative community,” Thanh shares.

The decision to move across the globe was not without its challenges. As an international student, Thanh faced uncertainties about adapting to a new country and academic culture. “I initially had concerns about fitting in—adapting to a new country and academic culture. However, Penn’s support system made the transition smooth and welcoming,” he recalls.

From approachable professors to the vibrant international student network, Thanh quickly found a sense of belonging.

“The best part has been the sense of collaboration and shared ambition. Late-night project grinds, cultural potlucks, and the camaraderie of adjusting to life in the U.S.—I’ve found a second family here,” Thanh reflects.

Innovation in Action
At Penn, Thanh’s academic journey reached new heights. One of his most significant projects focused on transforming warehouse automation. Collaborating with his peers, Thanh developed an infrastructure-based system for autonomous navigation, integrating advanced perception and vehicle dynamics.

“This project allowed me to combine my passion for robotics and real-world applications to solve critical industry problems,” he explains.

His hands-on work in robotics exemplifies the transformative power of Penn’s research environment, where students tackle global challenges with innovative solutions.

Beyond academics, Thanh immersed himself in Penn’s dynamic social and cultural landscape. From Graduate Student Engineering Government (GSEG) happy hours to events hosted by the GRASP Lab, Thanh discovered a community that made Penn feel like home.

“The GRASP Lab has been instrumental—not just for its research environment but also for creating a welcoming space to connect with peers passionate about robotics,” Thanh notes.

These experiences provided Thanh with more than just friendships; they enriched his perspective, making his time at Penn memorable and fulfilling.
